Praying for a “White Christmas” at NBFMC

Merry Christmas… oh, wait… it’s not even Thanksgiving yet. 🙂

I wanted to send out this message to you all, since the “Christmas Season Machine” is already in full-swing in seemingly every part of our world.  Over the past three years, we at NBFMC have embarked on a different journey at Christmastime.  We have partnered with a movement called Advent Conspiracy [AC] and have encouraged all at our church to step back from the consumer culture of our world and to embrace Jesus as the true reason for this season.  As individuals, families, and churches:  we will strive to worship Christ fully, spend less on unnecessary gifts, as well as give more of our time and relational gifts to our loved ones this Christmas.

Another important part of our [AC] Campaign is to raise funds for a special project that will bless some of “the least of these” in our world, as Jesus commands in Matthew 25: 34-40.  Over the past three years, we have focused on raising funds to help provide clean water to parts of the world that need it.  While that is still a great need and a great cause to give to, our church  has decided to raise funds for another issue…human trafficking.  There are currently more slaves on Earth than in any other time in history, with many of them being women and girls who are forced into sex trafficking rings.  This is NOT just a problem in other countries. It exists in the U.S., as well.

Wellspring Living is a Christian organization (based in Atlanta) that is dedicated to rescue, restore, and renew the lives of girls and women who have been victims of sex trafficking in America.  Through counseling, mentoring, job training, and life-skill education; these girls and women are given a chance to regain their dignity and their freedom.  Part of their ministry was the creation of a book (and the Campaign that accompanies it) called “The White Umbrella” , which was written by the organization’s founder Mary Frances Bowley.  The powerful image of caring individuals holding the white (for purity) umbrella (for protection) over these women is a great one to help us all connect with!

So…we at NBFMC will be encouraged to make it a “White Christmas” this year:  to raise funds for this Campaign which will help provide the protection and restore the purity that these women desperately need.  For any of you that wish to make a donation to this cause in honor of a loved one as an alternative Christmas gift, the church will have gift cards that can help with that.  Also, internet links to the Campaign, the book, and the promotional video can be found below.  Please pass this info on to your friends and loved ones…. and may this be a great season for us all to honor Jesus and bless others in His Name!
