Daily Lent Devotional #3 (March 11, 2011)

James 1: 2-4 (Contemporary English Version)

2 “My friends, be glad, even if you have a lot of trouble. 3You know that you learn to endure by having your faith tested. 4But you must learn to endure everything, so that you will be completely mature and not lacking in anything.”

I know that James is a beloved book by many Christians, particularly due to its blunt and plain language. 🙂  Rarely does there occur any “flowery” language in that book, just straight-talk about life and faith.  This passage is somewhat about faith in God.  Yes, we need to turn to God in faith when trials, tests, and troubles come our way.  God is repeatedly referred to in Scripture as our Strength, Refuge, Shelter, and Guide.  When the tough stuff hits us, we must first believe that God exists, that He cares for us, and that He knows what’s best.  We must believe that before we would ever trust Him enough to obey His Will and lean on His Power.

I feel, in many ways, that this passage is about God’s faith IN US.  God believes in you.  Yes…you! 🙂

Despite our faults and foolishness, God is willing to trust the expansion of His Kingdom here on Earth to us.  Jesus left the keys to the family business in the church’s hands when He returned to Heaven, reminding us of His Big Plan to save the world and that the Holy Spirit would come upon us to help us do it.  When we face tests and temptations, troubles and trials; God’s desire and belief is that we can push through them to the other side (with His help).  God takes no delight in our struggles.  He would work through rewards and pleasures, if so many of us didn’t thrive better in times of crisis.

So, this Lent Season, let us resolve not to run from difficulty and trials.  Let God finish the operation that He is performing on our character and heart during those times.  Let us go through those times, if not joyful, at least hopeful that God has SOMETHING to show us through the pain.  You CAN get through whatever struggle you may be facing , with His loving support and the support of His church.  God believes in you!  May you come to believe in yourself , as well.

Blessings,

Pastor Josh
