Uncovering the Conspiracy: Christmas at NBFMC

Starting last year, I issued a challenge to NBFMC.  I had become convinced that the rampant consumerism and materialism was eating away at our ability to fully honor and enjoy the Christmas season.  It was this desire to have a more meaningful and Christ-centered Advent season that led to our church partnering with the Advent Conspiracy (www.adventconspiracy.orgVideos about this great movement can be found in my Vodpod this month. A book was released last year to help others fully embrace this new way to honor Christ at Christmas and info for it can be found here:  http://www.amazon.com/Advent-Conspiracy-Christmas-Still-Change/dp/0310324521

The 4 main points to Advent Conspiracy are:

1.)  Worship Fully ~ Christmas starts with Jesus, and ends with Jesus.  We make room in our hearts and life to celebrate the amazing fact that God has given us His Son, sent Him to Earth, and that his life/death/resurrection has changed everything for us.  Worshipful energy and passion need to be priorities, not just as items to check off a “to-do” list.

2.)  Spend Less ~ America spends an average of $450 Billion on Christmas every year.  What if we each bought one less gift?  What if we resisted the cattle call into debt that has devoured many families?  What if we make this be Christmas again, instead of “stuff-mas”?  What if we learned and taught our children to value quality over quantity and to spend less?  What if?

3.)  Give More ~ What was the last meaningful gift that you had given or received?  How many of our gifts are given robotically out of obligation?  How many gifts have we received in a similar way?  How many Wish Lists now are dominated by:  cash or gift cards?  The heart of giving then becomes stale and giving means less.  What if we were intentional about giving more love and attention to our loved ones, even if we had to clear some chaotic clutter off of our schedules?  What if we took the time to be creative and gave less gifts, but more from our heart?  What if we gave to charities that touched our heart, in the name of loved ones?  Some alternative giving ideas are at rethinkingchristmas.com .

4.) Love All ~ We often give time and gifts to loved ones and people “like us” at Christmastime, but what about the rest of the world that is desperately aching for tangible acts of love and support?  This Christmas, after spending less, we could choose to give out of our excess to those who need it most.  One crucial area is the lack of clean water, which is killing many all over the world.  This Christmas at NBFMC, we are raising money to send water filters to Haiti.  $50 = 1 filter = clean water for a family, for life! Our Free Methodist denomination is partnering with Sawyer to provide the “PointOne Water Filters” for this project.  You can learn more about this great ministry tool at:  http://sawyerpointonefilters.com/

May you and your family hear the call and enter the story of Christmas in a new way with us this year!  I was so blessed last year and can’t wait to see how God will meet us and bless our church as we become blessings to our loved ones and to all of God’s children who He loves as much as us.
