“The Lord is a Warrior”

I remember hearing a lot about the “armor of God” growing up.  The great passage from Ephesians 6: 10-18 was frequently mentioned as it relates to standing strong against temptations and the Devil’s schemes to harm us.  I know there is even Armor of God playsets for kids to dress up in to reinforce the message 🙂

I always thought, though, that being sent into battle (even with all the armor one could find) against demons was pretty scary and intimidating.  I brushed those thoughts off as a lack of faith on my part and that I had to just suck it up and better embrace my role to combat demonic power that shows up in my life.

But then I learned that God is a warrior.  The passages below, as well as a song/lyrics that are further down, drive home the point that all Jewish people understood:  God and his angels will fight for those who rest in Him.  God takes up the case of the downtrodden, beat down, and victimized.  God is active in protecting His people.  This gave me great comfort to join Him in the spiritual battles that I now face, knowing that I don’t go into it alone.

Exodus 15: 2-3

2 The LORD is my strength and my song;
he has become my salvation.
He is my God, and I will praise him,
my father’s God, and I will exalt him.

3 The LORD is a warrior;
the LORD is his name.

Jeremiah 20:11

“the LORD is with me like a mighty warrior”

Deut. 1:29-31

29 Then I said to you, “Do not be terrified; do not be afraid of them. 30 The LORD your God, who is going before you, will fight for you, as he did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes, 31 and in the desert. There you saw how the LORD your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place.”

Deut. 3:22

“Do not be afraid of them; the LORD your God himself will fight for you.”

Nehemiah 4: 20

“Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, join us there. Our God will fight for us!

Jeremiah 50:25, 33-34

25The LORD has opened his arsenal
and brought out the weapons of his wrath,
for the Sovereign LORD Almighty has work to do
in the land of the Babylonians.

33 This is what the LORD Almighty says:
“The people of Israel are oppressed,
and the people of Judah as well.
All their captors hold them fast,
refusing to let them go.

34 Yet their Redeemer is strong;
the LORD Almighty is his name.
He will vigorously defend their cause
so that he may bring rest to their land,
but unrest to those who live in Babylon.”

Warrior by:  Kemper Crabb (performed by: Caedmon’s Call)

Chorus:

The Lord is a warrior
The Lord is mighty in battle
The Lord is a warrior
The Lord of hosts is He

My Lord is a fortress
He is a Sun and a Shield
The Lord is a Deliverer
To those who put their trust in Him

He gives strength unto His people
He guards His own with His Right Hand
The Angel of the Lord camps around the ones who fear Him
And delivers them

The Lord of Hosts is He
The Lord of Hosts is He
