“What Jesus Demands From The World” – Daily Devotional (6/17/10): Demand #16 “Humble Yourself By Making War On Pride”

Luke 20:45-47

45While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples, 46“Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. 47They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. Such men will be punished most severely.”

Luke 8:9-14

9To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable: 10“Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11The Pharisee stood up and prayed about[a] himself: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’  13“But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ 14“I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Matthew 5:3

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus repeatedly spoke about the need for those who follow after him to check their pride at the door.  Whether it takes the form of boasting, self-pity, defiance of God’s laws, or anything else; pride is incompatible with the Christian faith.  No wonder C.S. Lewis referred to other sins as common illnesses, but referred to pride as “spiritual cancer”.  It is the praise of Jesus that we should strive for, not the eyes or applause of others.  We are told that when we desire and engineer the spotlight to fall on us on earth, it will miss us in Heaven.  We forfeit God’s reward when we choose to seize it for ourselves.  That probably sounds familiar to Satan.  Pride was his fatal flaw, which clouded his judgment and led to his rebellion against God.  Sounds foolish to us now, yet so many follow his lead and path now.  We are called to declare war on our pride and not accept any “treaties” it may offer  This will be a life-long task, but Jesus demands it of us nonetheless.
