“What Jesus Demands From The World” – Daily Devotional (6/13/10): Demand #12 “Worship God in Spirit and Truth”

John 4:19-24

19“Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet. 20Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”

21Jesus declared, “Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.”

Matthew 4:8-10

8Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9“All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”  10Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’ (Deuteronomy 6:13)”

Matthew 6:24

No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.

This passage from John 4 gives us a vision of how God truly views worship.  It has very little to to with what type of building we do it in, in what language, or anything else superficial.  Israel was so focused on arranging the “outside” of their worship that they had forgotten that true worship starts on the inside and works its way out into our lives.  The way we live and the love that we offer to others is the purest form of worship that God demands.  It can’t become a “to-do list”, though.  It must come from our heart and spirit authentically.  Praise God that the old system of sacrifices has been replaced by the perfect Sacrifice in Jesus.  The offer of grace through Jesus is now open to all people, everywhere.  In light of this Good News, we should be compelled to respond in worship, both in song and in our lifestyle.
