“What Jesus Demands From The World” – Daily Devotional (6/11/10): Demand #11 “Fear Him Who Can Destroy Both Body and Soul in Hell”

Matthew 25:41, 46

41“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels…. 46“Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

Matthew 10:28-31

28”Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. 30And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”

Jesus spoke about Hell more than anyone else in the Bible.  A brief summary of the terms he used for it are:  “outer darkness, a fiery furnace, the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels, unquenchable fire, a place where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, and eternal punishment”.

It seems pretty contradictory for us to have spent the past few days focusing on loving and trusting God, and now being told to fear Him.  Now we are reminded that this same God will sentence individuals to the type of Hell described above.  What are we to do with these contrasting pictures of God?  The passage from Matthew 10 can help clarify this.  Jesus does remind us of the fact that there are real and terrible consequences of a life lived under sin when that life ends and is confronted with a holy God.  If our sins are still upon us, unforgiven, when we die… only Hell awaits.  That is more than enough reason to be afraid and to take our lives seriously.  Then Jesus tells us not to be afraid and that our lives are invaluably precious to God.  When we connect those two ideas, we can understand why Jesus spoke so often about the horrors of Hell.  His desire is that none should perish eternally and be separated from God forever.  Jesus’ mission was to give the sacrifice that all of God’s children would need to reunite with God again, and to stay with Him forever.  But we must take this warning seriously… for ourselves and others.
