“What Jesus Demands From The World” – Daily Devotional (6/04/10): Demand #3 “Come To Me”

Matthew 11:28

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

John 7:37

On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.”

John 6:35

Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.”

“When a person is born anew and experiences repentance, his attitude about Jesus changes.  Jesus himself becomes the central focus and supreme value of life.  Before the new birth happens and repentance occurs, a hundred other things seem more important and more attractive:  health, family, job, friends, sports, music, food, hobbies, retirement.  But when God gives the radical change of new birth and repentance, Jesus himself becomes our supreme treasure.  Therefore, his demand that we come to him is not burdensome.  It means coming to the one who has become everything to us. (pg. 44)”

Jesus invites us to come to him and “eat and drink” so that we may receive the fuel we need for life.  To paraphrase C.S. Lewis, God designed the human machine to run on Him and it will not run properly on anything else.  Jesus invites us to come out of the shadows and walk in His light, but many are not willing.  As Jesus said of many in his generation, “You refuse to come to me and have life (John 5:40).” In the Old Testament, God often referred to the Israelites as a “stubborn and stiff-necked people”, clinging to their own plans and not resting fully in the plans God had for them.  If we really want to find life, we have to look where life lives.  It resides eternally in Jesus Christ.

***  A stirring song that illustrates this “demand” is Come To Jesus/Untitled Hymn by Chris Rice, with a video of it linked to my Vodpod on this page .  May it stir you to come and stay with Jesus.
