“What Jesus Demands From The World” – Devotional (6/3/10): Demand #2 “Repent”

Matthew 4:17

From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”

Luke 5:32

I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Luke 13:5

I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.

Throughout Jesus’ public ministry, from beginning to end, he preached for people to repent.  In basic terms, “repent” means to turn away from one thing and turn towards something else.  That we should turn from our selfish ways and turn back to God.  That we should turn back to God all that we have turned toward ourselves.  The turn begins on the inside, with a realigning of our allegiances and priorities.  It begins with walking away from habits that destroy ourselves and alienate us from others.  However, we can’t just turn from one thing to another to another to another, and then back to the first thing.  We often rotate allegiances to other “gods” and “loves”, rather than running into the arms of the God who made us and loves us.

So……why don’t we repent?  What holds us back?  The reasons vary from person to person.  Pride and unwillingness to admit our mistakes.  Lack of trust in God’s plan for us.  Fear about change.  Whatever the cause, God’s desire for us to repent is so that we can avoid perishing.  Our life here will end sometime and God wishes for us to escape eternal separation that awaits in Hell.  Adam and Eve ran from God in the Garden of Eden, and their children have been running from God ever since.  In the person of Jesus, we are called to come close to God again with Christ being the bridge to do so.  The choice is up to us.

***  Feel free to watch the “Psalm 51” video in my Vodpod link on this page, which is a musical version of King David’s confession of repentance.
